Australian Racing Fashion - Get to Know Bree Laughlin

Spring Racing Fashions - Bree Laughlin

Caulfield Cup
Bree Laughlin, Gai Waterhouse and the Caulfield Cup

She loves tilting her hats and had that one amazing super-favorite dress when she was a girl!

During the 2010 Spring Racing Carnival, Bree Laughlin traveled the state hosting various Fashions on the Field events and appeared on TVN’s popular program, Two Cups and a Plate. She was selected as the Face of Caulfield in 2011.

With the racing season for 2012 at Saratoga Racecourse behind us, I wanted to get to know my fellow racing fashion fans in Australia - this is the fourth interview in a series.

Can you share a story about the first time you wore a hat?

Growing up I wore hats all the time, mainly for sport though. I remember a girl band called ‘Girlfriend’ and they wore brimmed hats you would fold up at the front - very fashionable at the time! My best friends and I all had one at some stage! I certainly had a favourite dress though, a number of favourite dresses in fact growing up. One particular dress, my party dress, I was given by an Aunt around the age of 5 and my Mum had to hide it I loved it so much! It was a typical dress for a girl of that age to love... pink with a frilled layer bottom and a white sash with a bow on the side. It’s funny the things you remember!

Were there any men or women in your family that wore hats?

I come from a golfing family and so a number of the Laughlin Gentlemen all wore golf caps but nobody in my family really inspired me by example. Where I am originally from in Northern Victoria it becomes very hot in summer so hats were wore more so for purpose as opposed to being a fashion accessory.

How does wearing a hat make you feel?

"A hat can make my ensemble feel complete"

I love wearing hats, particularly those racing related. If correctly fitted a hat really frames a person’s face and can accentuate their features beautifully. Depending on the occasion for me a hat can make my ensemble feel complete. Casually I find hats a really funky way to either dress up or relax an outfit and these days we probably don’t consider a hat enough to accessorize. I have loads of handbags/clutches, shoes, scarves and jewellery but comparatively, when I think about it, no where near enough hats!

Do you have any traditions or rituals around choosing or putting on a hat with an outfit for a special event?

"The tilt of a hat is crucial
to the portrayal and personality of the hat"

When it comes to putting on a hat - it is the last item I address. The tilt of a hat is crucial to the portrayal and personality of the hat and you. I am very fussy when it comes to those small details.
When selecting a hat to go with a particular outfit I usually have an overall vision of the look. Whether I hunt for the hat in the look or have it made, I always have a visual. At times though, this can be to my detriment because I am so determined to achieve that particular look, I won't settle for anything less... a tiring personality trait I can tell you ;)!

Do you have any favorite milliners? What are some of your go-to clothing brands when it comes to racing fashions?

This is a tough question! I have a number of favourite milliners all for different reasons. Jill Humphries from Jill & JackMillinery is an incredible talent an I have worn a number of Jill’s pieces this Spring. Her leather work is incredible and I love her sculpting. Kerrie Stanley is another I love, again for her clever use of shapes. I am not a great wearer of floral so lean towards sculpted pieces. Other millinery I enjoy include works from Phillip Treacy, Richard Nylon, Jonathan Howard and Phillip Rhodes. Not all of which I could wear, but certainly admire.

I like to try different things with my race wear so tend to wear various labels and not lean towards one particular brand. This year I have worn Willow, Josh Goot and Mossman. Others I like include Arthur Galan, Ginger & Smart, Romance was Born and Marc Jacobs. Carla Zampatti always does lovely race wear as well, suitable for a number of ages and I am big fan of Colette Dinnigan’s work - love her collections this season! Relatively new is Yeojin Bae’s label YB J’AIME which is another that has some really beautiful pieces for racing this year - simple, feminine and understated.

Can you share some tips and advice on how to get a racing outfit to "flow" from the hat to the clothes and accessories, to the shoes?

"Balance is a very important element to my race wear"

I am very much a visual person when it comes to fashion and imagine what works and what doesn’t. Balance is a very important element to my race wear. Whether it be the width of a brim on a hat to an outfit or the intensity or frequency of colours in an outfit, that is an important element for me. I am also big on shape flow. So if the theme through the outfit is rounded or flowing, I am unlikely to team it with angled millinery. To me, certain hat styles do work better with certain outfits and that for me is influenced by history, eras and icons. But there is no doubt, it is always fun to try and come up with something unique, that’s part of the challenge!

What is your favorite part of visiting your local racetrack?

"A relaxing day out"

I have two ‘local’ racetracks now, both Kerang and Caulfield.

The Kerang Turf Club is about 300km north of Melbourne and I head to the races there at least once a year.  My favourite part of the races in Kerang is catching up with friends and family that I haven’t seen for some time and relaxing. The Fashion is largely relaxed and the whole feel is a low key afternoon out.

Caulfield for me isn’t a great deal different. Some may think that odd but there you are still very close to the action and I always run into friends and have a relaxing day out. The main difference between the two I guess is in the competition - both fashions and on the track.

BLESSED ARE THE MEEK

Shakuhachi Neon Lace dress on Friend in Fashion Shakuhachi Neon Lace dress on Friend in Fashion Shakuhachi Neon Lace dress on Friend in Fashion Shakuhachi Neon Lace dress on Friend in Fashion

For my last guest post for SurfStitch, I couldn't resist styling this buttery soft Blessed are the Meek leather skirt.

Generally, I love to wear lots of colour, but as soon as I slipped this statement skirt on, I felt like mixing things up a bit, channelling a head-to-toe neutral look.

In other news, it isn't long now until my birthday celebrations, which means the search is on for the perfect party dress. At the moment, Zimmermann and Alice McCall are at the top of my wish list.

As always, tweet, instagram or facebook any suggestions you might have - I'd love to see them.

What to wear to a dinner / dancing date - Tiane Novati headpiece

I wore one of my Tiane Novati headpieces to listen to Mundo Nuevo perform at Carmen's Cafe in Troy.

Carmen's Cafe is a place for expats and lovers of music to gather and listen to local musicians. This was a warm, rainy night in late October, but the rain stopped long enough to let a few of the couples dance outside under the stars and streetlamps.

I found this headpiece, which is mounted on a thin wire headband, at Anchor No. 5 Boutique in Troy. I look forward to wearing my Tiane Novati headpiece again in the Spring with a lace dress.

Walking a mile in their shoes - Capital City Rescue Mission Annual Banquet

Marie Galvin fascinator

I attended the Capital City Rescue Mission Banquet at Michael's Banquet House in Latham, NY. Proceeds from the event went to fund the Mission's Supportive Housing Project to equip each of the 44 apartments in the Supportive Housing building with a kitchenette and a bathroom.

Michael's Banquet House has a lot of full length mirrors, so I got to get a good look at my fascinator in action. When I walk, the top layer of feathers catches the breeze and they flutter very playfully.

You even get a peek at my Marc Fisher Joey Peep Toe pumps! These are my go-to special event shoes. I wore them to the opera and to my wedding earlier this year.

It is a privilege to have the resources to dress up, looking and feeling beautiful at an event that supports the work of those who minister to the less fortunate.

We heard very personal stories of lives of violence, tragedy and loss from three people that turned around their lives with the help of the Rescue Mission. I am thankful that I have not had to walk in their shoes and grateful that I am able to help them by supporting the Capital City Rescue Mission

A quick peek at what the Mission does in our community:

Summer time is fast approaching, which means lots and lots more colour to my wardrobe. Neon is always a favourite of mine, and I had a lot of fun teaming neon accessories with this vibrant Shakuhachi lace dress.

Tomorrow, I'm off to explore Daylesford for the first time. I'm so excited and can't wait to test-out the natural springs. As always, you can follow my adventure on instagram (@friendinfashion).

What to wear to a polo match - polo style advice from Paula O'Neil

Polo Style advice from Style For Hire Stylist Paula O'Neil

Style for Hire

Can you tell me a little bit about your background as a stylist and how you first came to love polo?

I have loved both fashion and horses since I was a little girl growing up outside of Seattle in WA state.  I especially loved showing my horse, because it combined the elegance of the English equestrian look with the beauty and fluidity of the horse’s movements. There was something so exciting and lovely about the two together.  Having my hair in a bun, wearing breeches, a smart riding jacket and my velvet riding helmet definitely made me sit up straighter!

My love for polo specifically came as a result of working with dear friends who owned a two polo clubs, one in the Pacific Northwest and one in La Quinta, CA.  As their marketing and special events consultant, I traveled to polo clubs across the country, connecting with the players, horses and many people who live and breathe this amazing international sport.

What are some tips for American ladies on choosing a hat and outfit for a polo match?

First, it is important to consider what type of match you will be attending, and like any special event, take note of the time and location.  Will it be a casual match on a lazy Saturday or is it a special memorial cup, 26-goal event to which "Everyone" will attend?

"Polo is a very international sport, and that Argentine + European sensibility and love for perfecting tailored, luxurious fabrics and accessories in simple silhouettes will be appreciated much more on these fields"

There are a few specific tips on what can be both appropriate and comfortable, but overall my opinion is that an "easy-chic elegant" approach will fit the bill every time.  Unlike going to the "races", i.e. the Kentucky Derby, polo is a very international sport, and that Argentine + European sensibility and love for perfecting tailored, luxurious fabrics and accessories in simple silhouettes will be appreciated much more on these fields than the ka-pow of the super-posh, over-the-top chapeaus of the track.

That being said, here are a few tips to nailing that effortless "Who me? I just threw this on" look that we are discussing, while remaining comfortable and ready to fully participate in all that a polo match has to offer:

1.  Ladies, please do not wear shoes with stiletto heels.  Period.  A polo match might be held in a beautiful club environment, but you will inevitably walk on grass to get there.  It completely ruins an overall look when one is constantly pulling one's heels out of the dirt.  Our solution?  A fantastic wedge heel or an elegant and embellished flat sandal can not only complement your outfit, it can make it possible for you to participate in the "divot-stomping" on the field during half-time.  If you don't know what this is, go ahead, rent Pretty Woman one more time.

"There is no better accessory than a hat for a polo match"

2. There is no better accessory than a hat for a polo match, as it can both complete a total look AND save you from the sun beating down on your head during the hours that you are near the field.   Again, when considering a hat for polo, it is better to leave the long feathered, structured, multi-tiered bonnets at home in their boxes, and instead reach for a chic panama, or the unstructured look of a wide, yet flexible more "beachy" type hat.  I have also seen fantastic geometric print headscarves, a la Pucci, put to great use at polo matches, hearkening back to the days of Princess Grace in Monaco - especially when worn with oversized, Jackie O dark sunnies.

"A jersey or sun dress in a sleek, modern cut or a long maxi dress with some statement jewelry pieces can be great for those warm weather matches"

3. The ultimate goal for one's outfit should be to combine comfort with style and polish.  I find the easiest way to do this for women, utilizing the footwear and head accessory tips above, is to throw on a dress.  Polo is almost always played when it isn't raining, and a jersey or sun dress in a sleek, modern cut or a long maxi dress with some statement jewelry pieces can be great for those warm weather matches or, when layered with a great little jacket or knit number on top, can easily transition when the clouds roll in.

Do you think American polo fans have different style depending upon the location of the polo match?

Absolutely!  When I visited Big Horn in Wyoming, the perfect outfit was a perfectly fitting pair of white or dark wash jeans (for the ladies, not just the players whose uniform is always a pair of white jeans), some sort of long sleeve or short sleeve silk shirt in a muted color, and a well-worn pair of Ariat boots - accessorized with a cashmere shawl, an Hermes bracelet and men's watch.  Polo is very much a family sport, and at clubs like Big Horn and San Diego Polo Club I spent much of my time sprawled on a picnic blanket with a glass of Veuve in my hand.  This would not be so easy to fully enjoy if one was in an Herve Leger dress...

In West Palm Beach, the most stylish women (again, many of them from traveling from Argentina, Australia, or Europe to play in one of the most competitive polo communities in the world) will wear an outfit that whispers rather than screams uber-chic, sometimes approaching the event with a nod to a more "formal" affair - enter a Trina Turk colorful sheath or BCBG flowing maxi dress with Stuart Weitzman wedges, or Gucci Romanesque-flats.  Throw a great clutch into the mix and you're done to enjoy the day.  More often than not, however, they are sporting a more easy breezy look and focus more on luxurious accessories than anything else (great bag, sunglasses, hat, shawl, statement jewelry)

I would recommend for anyone attending a polo match/event for the first time, take a bit of time and search out some of the club's previous event photos online.  This will give you a better idea of how to refine your look given that particular club's approach to polo overall (more casual, more formal, or themed attire) and give you some intel as to what type of match you will be attending (regular play or a finals cup).

Do you have any secret tips to get the most out of a polo match?

My advice would be to spend some time learning the very basic rules of the sport.  If you have the time, go online to search out some of the players and learn their backgrounds.  Many of them are from other parts of the world (as are their horses!) and this international element, combined with some of the best athleticism of any sport, can be as intoxicating as anything you might receive at the bar!

A visit to The Tailored Tea in Latham, NY

Arun and I went to brunch at The Tailored Tea in Latham, NY.

I wanted to feel feminine and ladylike, so I chose my purple flower Tiane Novati headpiece by Tara Holmes that I found at Anchor No. 5 Boutique in Troy, NY.

When I first put on the headband with the floral scarf, I said, "Wow!" It seems like something magical happens when I pair the right accessories with a simple dress. I can't quite put my finger on it. I just feel elegant.

A nice lady seated at another table in the tearoom mouthed "Love your hat" to me. I mouthed "thank you" and smiled from ear to ear! I always feel even prettier when I get compliments from strangers.

The half pot of tea is enough for two people. We ordered two different half pots of tea so we could enjoy the second pot with an after-brunch scone. The atmosphere felt like we were in owner Anne Misir's home enjoying a leisurely breakfast with other families.

When we were there, the restaurant was full of multiple generations of families. It is a place that grandmothers and granddaughters both enjoy! There is even a dress up box full of hats for young ladies to wear while they enjoy their tea.
