THE MIDI DRESS

Not a maxi, or a mini, but the midi dress is the most flattering of styles, with this black and white number proving itself not only as the perfect all-occasion dress, but also as the perfect travel companion.

With suit-cases still unpacked, all things travel have me more than pre-occupied of late.

After returning from the US, Mexico, Canada, Singapore and closer to home in Sydney, I'm glad to be spending some time at home, for now, however the allure of revisiting familiar places and unchartered territory is strong.

As the proverb goes - 'for my part, I travel not to go anywhere, but to go. I travel for travel’s sake. The great affair is to move', and now, more than ever I'm excited of the adventures that lay ahead.

Until next time.

My husband Arun loves to make a cashew, coconut and pumpkin curry this time of year.

If you'd like to try it with your pumpkins, all you need is onion, coconut milk, cashews, basmati rice, serrano chiles, a cinnamon stick, fresh curry leaves, turmeric, cumin seeds and lemon juice.

We buy our fresh curry leaves at the local Indian store. Our favorite is India Bazaar in Albany, NY.

The recipe is here:

Racing Fashion in Australia - Kirrily Parry Interview

Australian racing fashion ladies dress hat
Kirrily Parry
"Wearing an outfit including your dress, millinery, shoes, bag, gloves and accessories  for the first time is so exciting."

Kirrily Parry enjoys dressing up to attend the races at racecourses across Victoria (Australia). With the racing season for 2012 at Saratoga Racecourse behind us, I wanted to get to know my fellow racing fashion fans in Australia - this is the second interview in a series.

"I realised what was missing from my outfits.
The missing link was a standout hat."

Did you wear hats as a child?

"I didn't have much to do with hats and millinery until my late teens but as a child I loved accessories. I would always have ribbons and bows in my hair and I'd wear strings of colourful beads around my neck. I liked pretty things when I was a little girl but I was also a bit of a tomboy riding motorbikes and playing with my dogs. I always loved going to the horse races to socialise and that is where I discovered the sport of Fashions on the Field. I started competing here and there for fun but it wasn't until I met Danica Erard that I realised what was missing from my outfits. The missing link was a standout hat to wow the judges. Once I started to wear her millinery I started to win at a lot of the local fashion competitions."

"All of the women in my family have always had
a large involvement in the community."

Does anyone in your family wear hats?

"I think I got my love of accessories from my Nanna Pat. She is known for wearing rings on every finger and always takes pride in her appearance. There isn't a history of fashions on the field competitors in my family but there is a history of competitive and proactive women. My mother was a charity queen in the 70's and all of the women in my family have always had a large involvement in the community through various channels."

"The feeling you get when wearing a hat
is a very special one.
I get the feeling of anticipation
of a great day celebrating with friends."

How does wearing hats make you feel?

"The feeling you get when wearing a hat is a very special one. I get the feeling of anticipation of a great day celebrating with friends and partaking in the sports of horse racing and fashions on the field. You may be wondering why I keep referring to fashions on the field as a sport but believe me it is in Australia. There are women and men that are always on the circuit especially during the spring carnival which is racing and fashions busiest time of the year. Wearing an outfit including your dress, millinery, shoes, bag, gloves and accessories for the first time is so exciting. You can't wait to see what reaction you get from your racing fashion peers and from the judges."

"I tend to be tempted by
luxurious fabric and classic cuts."

When I asked her to recommend where to buy ladies dress hats and racing fashion, she said "My favourite Milliner and one of my best friends is Danica Erard from Danica Erard Millinery. She was the person who introduced me to quality headwear and taught me to appreciate fine craftsmanship and materials. I have about 20 of Danica's stunning creations now and most have full outfits to match. My favourite clothing usually comes from Vintage stores and I tend to be tempted by luxurious fabric and classic cuts. I also buy off the rack and like Australian designers Wayne Cooper and Carla Zampatti. My favourite international designers are Marc Jacobs and Chanel."

"The best thing about a country race day
is the hospitality and the beautiful scenery."

Where do you go to the races?

"There are racetracks dotted all over the state of Victoria where I am from and I am a fashion Blogger for Country Racing Victoria which is the governing body for all of the rural racetracks in our state. I blog about the fashions on the field for the north west of our state which includes about 15 race clubs. The best thing about a country race day is the hospitality and the beautiful scenery. Most clubs provided local food and wine for purchase and race days and you can really immerse yourself in the atmosphere of the day. People all put a bit more effort than usual into their attire and the whole day is like a big party. There is often live bands, kids' activities and other entertainment to keep the crowds busy in between races."

Australian racing fashion profile - Kelly Bannister

ladies dress hat and racing fashion
Kelly Bannister
"The right hat makes me feel spectacular
 and the centre of attention."
With the racing season for 2012 at Saratoga Racecourse behind us, I wanted to get to know my fellow racing fashion fans in Australia. Kelly Bannister is one of the elegant ladies that enjoys dressing up to attend the races at Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, host of the Melbourne Cup - Australia's richest horse race. This interview is the first in a series.

What is your favorite part of visiting your racetrack?

Kelly enjoys Flemington Racecourse because it is, "always abuzz with excitement, colour and movement. It’s an incredibly vibrant atmosphere and there is never a dull moment.  A highlight of spring racing carnival for me is always the fashion on the fields and sitting down with good company and a bottle of wine on a picnic blanket."

Can you share a story about the first time you wore a hat?

The first time I recall wearing a hat I loved was when I was 18.  My mother had purchased a vintage hat and I tried it on. It was black with a vibrant yellow accent and unlike anything I had ever seen before.    I hid it from her when she wasn't looking and refused to give it back. I still have that hat and I still adore it."

Did anyone in your family show you how to wear hats or inspire you by their example?

"No one of my family is really a hat wearer. I draw inspiration from my friends and I am very blessed to know some incredible, gorgeous, stylish women who know their race wear!"

How does wearing a hat make you feel?

"It's hard to be ignored in the right hat.  I think wearing a hat really brings a level of sophistication to an outfit. The right hat makes me feel spectacular and the centre of attention."

I asked Kelly for some shopping recommendations and she suggested her good friend and milliner Bonnie Evelyn for hats and told me she shops mostly vintage for dresses, but also admires Lisa Ho, Perri Cutten, Carla Zampatti and Anna Campbell for their "perfect, elegant dresses appropriate for race wear."

Hat lovers wear their hats - part two

That's a Pretty Hat fans wearing their best hats

I am turning That's a Pretty Hat over to
my fellow hat wearers again!

I especially like it when blog visitors tell me about their hats,
so I asked some recent commenters
to send me their best hat photos.
This is the second part of the series.

The (Ef)face

The (Ef)face

Caitlin from The (Ef)face says,"this black hat
caught my attention immediately upon entering
the little boutique where I found it,
and that is precisely why it needed to come home with me.
I  frequently wear it to give my
menswear-meets-womenswear looks
an extra dash of glamour and power.
The wide-brimmed beauty makes me feel
oh-so-chic and pretty.
I instantly want to speak in French
(even though I don't know French).
You have to tilt it slightly to one side,
and when you do, it's magic!"

Judith from Style Crone says, "I wear a hat every day, and I choose my hat partially based on my mood or the events of the day.  Then I choose the rest of my outfit!  Sometimes I change hats several times during the day because my activity changes, requiring a different feel or something appropriate to an occasion."

Dana from Dana's Lookbook says, "Wearing this hat makes me feel playful, beautiful and a bit naughty!  When I pull the brim just so over one eye it brings a smile to my face and a twinkle in my eye!  It makes me feel full of confidence and puts a strut in my stride.
I love my hat!"

I really enjoy reading your comments.
I have discovered great fashion blogs,
indie fashion blogs, vintage fashion blogs,
street style blogs and personal style blogs
because the stylish women behind them
commented on my blog.

Please tell me about your favorite hat
or newest hat in the comments below.

Move over little black dress, for me, as always it is about the perfect white dress, especially for spring and summer.

Unlike most from Melbourne, colour generally occupies the largest part of my wardrobe, but there is something simple and understated about a perfectly fitted crisp white dress, and this Bec & Bridge number certainly fits the bill.

Giorgio Armani Womenswear Spring-Summer 2013 Review

Variations, nuances, juxtapositions. The world of armani is multifaceted, as if observed through a kaleidoscope that separates, refracts and illuminates. It is ingenious in its use of shapes, fabrics, and its quality of workmanship. Subtle yet profound alterations create soft, naturally deconstructed fits, rendered fluid through the use of gossamer silk and organza.Light overcoats and short, beautifully tailored jackets fit like a glove, and are paired with flowing trousers, measured to perfection above the ankle, or shorts that suddenly bring the legs into sight. The low shoes are masculine yet tapered, the silver heels providing a shimmer of light with every step, while the high shoes come with rhinestone-studded heels. black, turquoise and grey are the main colours, accompanied by jade and light blue softened with white, brightened also in daywear by transparent yarns, crystal touches, and reflections. The sparkle is accentuated for the evening, with a constellation of stars on a navy blue background. Lightness is key, always, and with an added touch of nonchalance.
