Top 9 tips for visiting a hat shop or milliner

My Best 9 Tips for Visiting a Milliner:

Ellen Christine 'Gigi' hat

Have clean, dry hair and wear it loose
this will make it easy to try on hats
and play around with
hairstyles for your new hats.

Don't put foundation on your forehead -
to keep the inside of the hats clean.

Have an idea of the type of hat
you are looking for
and where you would like
to wear your new hat.

Hat shops can be overwhelming.
If you ask for help
you will be able to try on
just the hats that fit your needs.

Wear the outfit you want to style with the hat
or a little black dress.
It's easier to 'see' yourself wearing a hat
if you wear a stylish outfit.

Be sure to view your hat and outfit
in a full length mirror.

Don't be afraid to ask for a hand mirror
to look at the back of your hat and outfit.

Be open to new ideas
Try on at least one hat that is too scary,
over-the-top or 'fabulous' for you.

Listen to your feelings
How does the hat make you feel inside?
Never buy a hat that the saleslady,
milliner or your friend "loves" on you
unless you feel confident and amazing
wearing the hat, too.

What hat to wear to Saratoga Racecourse, Saratoga Springs, NY

I took a sneak peek at the Saratoga Racecourse
on a rainy day last month
before racing season 2012 began.

I like to watch thoroughbred horse racing
in a hat and a pretty dress
like the one from Reiss I wore that day.

My inside look at the Saratoga Racetrack is here:

FALL 2012 HAT TREND ALERT: Mystery

Autumn / Winter 2012 - 2013 HAT TREND ALERT – Mystery

Hiding in plain sight is the vibe that really has me
curious and excited for late summer and fall.
Celebrities are wearing hats to disappear into a crowd,
designers are turning the wedding veil
into a statement in black,
and Anne Hathaway’s Catwoman
makes eyebrows raise and jaws drop
in her timeless black ensemble.

Dior and Armani showed veils
in their Autumn / Winter 2012 collections.
Watch the Armani Prive fashion show here -

SocialiteLife.com shares photos of the new Catwoman -

Here is a teaser for the movie
focusing on Anne Hathaway's character:

Lilly Pulitzer ladybug dress and Scala hat

Lilly Pulitzer 'Ladybug' dress from Pink Paddock in Saratoga Springs,
Scala hat from Lifestyles of Saratoga boutique in Saratoga Springs,
Tiffany necklace

How To Keep Your Hat On In Windy Weather

This Scala hat has a thin ribbon
threaded through the inside.
The ribbon can be tied tightly
to make the hat fit snug on the head
when there is a breeze.

This dress makes me smile.
 The little ladybugs remind me
not to take life so seriously.

I think this is a perfect dress
for a backyard BBQ
or, as one commenter mentioned,
a trip to the country club.

Wearing hats in Charleston, SC

I went to college in North Carolina
and I still occasionally miss living in the South.

I was happy to find Archie Burkel
and her Charleston, SC based website HatLadies.org
She leads the Hat Ladies,
a group of hat loving ladies
that focuses on networking and charity work.

They have the best 'fancy hat' style!

See for yourself - here are photos
of the ladies gathering at Washington Park last year
in their hats and pretty dresses:

Here is a list of links
to photos of the ladies gathering

I like the black and white outfits and hats.
I am inspired by one lady's outfit
of a black shift, black hat and colorful blazer.
Check out this link for an eye-opening example
of color blocking trend using a hat -

Do you think ladies in
different parts of the U.S.
like different hat and outfit styles?
